  3. Moving House(s) By Pedal-Power
  4. 17 Apr 2008 at 10:28am
p pWe recently showed you a chair a target=new href="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/archives/007936.html" bungie-corded/a to the back of a bicycle. Scaling up a little, how do you move an entire apartment by bicycle? The Human Powered Vehicles Operators of Ottawa (a target=new href="http://hpv.tricolour.net/"HPVOoO/a) show us how. They have been experimenting with various uses of a large bicycle trailer they originally built as a parade float to carry a Hammond organ. On the a target=new href="http://hpv.tricolour.net/organ-trailer.html"web-page devoted to the trailer/a, they document the many bike trailer 'missions' they have undertaken since building the trailer, including fetching a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/06/28/15-12-07.html"garden supplies/a for a local community garden, a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/04/12/13-31-57.html"carrying 9 drummers /a in a peace rally, and experimenting with transporting the trike (the one usually used to pull the trailer) a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/07/19/hpv.html"on the trailer itself/a./p pIn an article on a target=new href="http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/004712.html"Bike co-ops, trails, and Ottawa cycling/a, I told you about how the HPV group helped Richard Guy Briggs move, in May 2003, a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/05/10/hpv.html"an entire three bedroom apartment/a by bicycle. /p center img alt="vicphotoofrgbonsofa2003.jpg" src="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/vicphotoofrgbonsofa2003.jpg" width="400" height="300" / pMoving Richard Guy Briggs (May 2007)br / (Photo courtesy Vic Gedris)br / /center/p pbr / a target=new href="http://vic.gedris.org/"Vic Gedris/a has a video of the move demonstrating that it is possible to type on a computer while it is being pulled by bicycle—the mobile office taken to new levels!/p center object width="425" height="355"param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BzYxSz1d58Mhl=en"/paramparam name="wmode" value="transparent"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BzYxSz1d58Mhl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"/embed/object p"Vic Gedris demonstrates the correct usage of the mobile office"br / (Video courtesy Vic Gedris)br / /center/p p/p pbr / In 2007, the HPVOoO was at it again, conducting three missions of the furniture-moving kind in the space of three months./p pIn May, Briggs moved a second time, this time from Chinatown to Sandy Hill. /p center object width="425" height="355"param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ri_IBVvGNHohl=en"/paramparam name="wmode" value="transparent"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ri_IBVvGNHohl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"/embed/object pMoving Richard Guy Briggs (May 2007)br / (video courtesy Mark Rehder)br / /center/p pbr / Although not entirely pedal-powered, this move involved a target=new href="http://drumbent.blogspot.com/2007/05/house-move-by-pedal-power.html"hauling some major appliances/a (two sets of fridge/stove), stereo equipment, and a very heavy load of bikes./p center img alt="second_move_250.jpg" src="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/second_move_250.jpg" width="250" height="375" / pMoving Richard Guy Briggs (May 2007)br / /center/p pbr / An extra green feature of this move was the old beer fridge Mark Rehder took to the recycler's on his cargo trike./p center img alt="fridgeondrum_trike.jpg" src="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/fridgeondrum_trike.jpg" width="400" height="300" / pre-Cycler recyling by tricycle (May 2007)br / (courtesy a href="http://re-cycles.ca"re-Cycles/a' Mark Rehder)br / /centerbr / /p p/p pTwo weeks later, the team was at it again, this time helping to move Greg Furlong, director of an Ottawa-based choir called a target=new href="http://www.justvoices.ca/listen.html"Just Voices/a, an activist choir with a cycling-flavoured a target=new href="http://www.justvoices.ca/songlist.html"repertoire/a. Their a target=new href="http://www.justvoices.ca/index.html"2008 Earth Day concert/a is coming up on April 22nd./p pGreg Furlong's four-block move was entirely pedal-powered, and included moving an assortment of instruments, including a helicon (an ancestor to the sousaphone), which was actually played during the move (see a target=new href="http://drumbent.blogspot.com/2007/06/house-move-by-pedal-power-again.html"Mark Rehder's blog/a entry for details)./p center object width="425" height="355"param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7TbIYCvkvRMhl=en"/paramparam name="wmode" value="transparent"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7TbIYCvkvRMhl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"/embed/object pMoving Greg Furlong (June 2007)br / (video courtesy Mark Rehder)br / /center/p p/p pbr / Mark Rehder directs the local a target=new href="http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/004712.html"bike co-op/a, a href="http://re-cycles.ca"re-Cycles/a. Since the house did not have to vacated immediately, Rehder's move was a href="http://drumbent.blogspot.com/2007/07/more-move-photos.html"staged over a number of days/a. /p pbr / Perhaps the most remarkable part of the move was moving the bicycle "a target=new href="http://drumbent.blogspot.com/2007/07/even-more-moving-photos.html"garage/a", a shed constructed to hold the trike. 27. CareFree HILL HILL HILL HILL...
  28. 27 Jan 2008 at 6:34pm
pspan style="font-size: 1.2em;"We had 12 riders for the CareFree hill fest. Once again, Bill Care, was successful in leading us on a ride that hit every hill in Lebanon County. The Huntzinger climb was the one that broke the camel's back. At 18% it took everything you had to keep the peddles turning, and it wasn't no short climb. By the time we all regrouped at the top everyone wanted to lynch Bill. Just to clarify things, Huntzinger will never be part of any CareFree ride again, ever. br /br /Once again a href="http://gretnabikes.com/Jed_Schober.asp "Jed/a and a href="http://hmb_cycling.blogs.com/whit100_1870.jpg "Whitaker/a were KOM's. This year Jim Sebastian, DDOT's Bicycle (and Pedestrian and TDM) Coordinator, Paul DeMaio, from MetroBike LLC, and Eric Gilliland (by phone) of WABA were his guests. They discussed the SmartBike pilot program to start by the end of the month (?). It's a three-gear bike with an internal hub I've learned. They discussed bike bunching, problems with installation of kiosks, what to do if the kiosk you want to park at is full (go to another kiosk or wait for someone to check one out and open a space)./pblockquotepquot;Bike sharing is not bike rental. You aren't supposed to take your bike into your office for 8 hoursquot;/p/blockquotepThere were also discussions of the need for more facilities, the history of WABA, Bike to Work Day (which will be a href="http://www.commuterpageblog.com/2008/05/bike-to-work--1.html"greener than ever/a this year), Competent Cycling Classes, legal and safe cycling, etc...br / /p pThere was more coverage of SmartBike - and Arlington's program - in the a href="http://www.readexpress.com/read_freeride/2008/05/tuesday_fit_smartbike_to_debut _a_wheel_d.php"Express/a/pblockquotepAnd already [DC is] about to face some competition from across the river. Arlington is right on D.C.'s heels with its own bike rental program, set to launch this fall./p pThe details are still a bit fuzzy, but strongPaul DeMaio/strong, bicycle promotions and car-sharing manager at the Arlington Division of Transportation, predicts at least 100 bikes will be available, scattered throughout the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor./p pSmartBike customers can get wheels off electric racks with a swipe of a membership card, while Arlington is considering a digital service in which users could unlock their rides via cell phone. /p pDeMaio anticipates an annual fee but says Arlington will also offer a weekly membership for tourists and those who want to try the system without making the yearlong commitment./p pWABA Executive Director strongEric Gilliland/strong says the dual programs demonstratenbsp; how far bicycling has come in the Washington area.br / quot; It's not just the ‘men in tights' — the guys out training or the hard-core commuters. It's accessible to everyone, quot; he says./p pThat includes strongSarah Roque/strong. The 31-year-old usually bikes from her Bethesda digs to her day job at the Department of Justice on a hybrid she bought off Craigslist. Even so, she often finds herself without wheels when she wants to take a quick daytime excursion. quot;I would love to go to certain places on an hour lunch break, but you just can't get over to the Mall, quot; she says. quot;I think this is a great idea.quot;/p/blockquotepa href="http://washcycle.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/05/1 5/gw_smartbike.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=300,height=181,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=n o,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false"img width="250" height="150" border="0" alt="Gw_smartbike" title="Gw_smartbike" src="http://washcycle.typepad.com/home/images/2008/05/15/gw_smartbike.jpg" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; float: right;" //a The a href="http://media.www.gwhatchet.com/media/storage/paper332/news/2008/05/12/News/Bike -Sharing.Comes.To.D.c-3369529.shtml"GWhatchet/a also has a write up on it./pblockquotepquot;We are starting with a relatively small program compared to the European states and seeing what happens, quot; Sebastian said. quot;We will accept two to three thousand subscribers, see how it's used and what people like and don't like, and then expand it.quot;/p pD.C. has over 30 miles of bike lanes, with plans for new lanes on G, H, 21st and 22nd streets in Foggy Bottom. DDOT is also in talks to set up a bike dock in Georgetown./p pquot;I have seen bikers use sidewalks putting pedestrians at risk, quot; said David Lehrman, a Foggy Bottom Advisory Neighborhood Commission member. quot;At least with Zipcar, a valid license and insurance is required. No skills test is involved with a bike rider.quot;/p/blockquotepYes, because clearly DC area drivers are highly skilled. [Nor is there a skills test for being an ANC member it appears.] Competent cycling classes, mentioned above - are free./pblockquotepquot;This is a great idea for sustainability and turning D.C. into a bike-friendly city, quot; GW senior Maggie Desmond said. quot;It will cut down on the use of cabs and Zipcar.quot;/p/blockquotepAdditionally if you keep listening, Kojo interviews Jim Malusa, the author of quot;Into Thick Air: Biking to the Bellybutton of Six Continentsquot; - the guy who biked to the lowest point of every continent (I've been to Bad Water in Death Valley but I didn't bike it. You could probably bike from near the top of Mt Whitney, the highest point in the continental US, to Bad Water in a single day - but I'd do it in the winter). /p pstrongAddendum:/strong The Gazette has a a href="http://www.gazette.net/stories/051508/frednew165359_32359.shtml"BTWD story/a as well - this one about Frederick, MD. Both the city and county transportation planners bike to work. It gives me great hope to see more transportation people - not just bike coordinators - biking to work./pblockquotep Upon accepting a position with the county last year, John Thomas, Frederick County’s transportation planner and his wife looked specifically for a home in Frederick city so he could ride his bike to work. Selling one of their cars, Thomas said they were able to buy ‘‘more house” with the savings by not having to pay insurance, maintenance, gas and other expenses for one of the vehicles./p p ‘‘In my everyday job, I’m tasked with dealing with transportation and traffic, one of the biggest issues in the county,” he said. ‘‘It is hard to say biking is a valid transportation option if I don’t do it myself.”/p pTim Davis, transportation planner for the City of Frederick, admits that while he is not on par with Thomas’ daily dedication, he too is an avid biker who commutes from his home in Ballenger Creek to the city’s Municipal Annex on West Patrick Street as much as he can./p p Davis said the city’s Shared Use Path Plan is helping to create more off-street recreational bike paths as well as link existing paths around the city, including county paths. The city has also committed $1.5 million to ‘‘Rails to Trails” program that turns former railroad tracks to recreational paths./p p Next year, he said, the city will undertake the development of a bicycle plan and network map for on-road streets in the city./p /blockquotep And more at a href="http://urbanplacesandspaces.blogspot.com/2008/05/tomorrow-is-bike-to-work-day-i n-dc.html"RPUS/a./p
